Standard First Aid vs Emergency First Aid: Which Course Is Right for You?
Understanding the Difference
Two of the most common first aid certifications in Canada are Standard First Aid and Emergency First Aid. Both are offered by the Canadian Red Cross and taught at Sharalife First Aid Inc. in Saskatoon, but they differ significantly in scope, duration, and the situations they prepare you for.
Emergency First Aid (EFA)
Emergency First Aid is a one-day course that covers the most critical life-saving skills: scene assessment, CPR/AED, choking response, wound care, and shock management. It is ideal for individuals who want a foundational certification quickly, or for workplaces with lower-risk environments. EFA certification is valid for three years.
Standard First Aid (SFA)
Standard First Aid is a more comprehensive two-day (or blended learning) course that covers everything in EFA plus additional topics: bone and joint injuries, head and spinal injuries, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, and more. SFA is required by many Saskatchewan workplaces under OHS regulations and is the preferred certification for childcare workers, teachers, coaches, and industrial workers. SFA certification is valid for three years.
Which Should You Choose?
If your workplace requires first aid certification, check your provincial OHS regulations — many require Standard First Aid. If you are a healthcare professional, consider our BLS or ACLS courses instead. For general public preparedness, Standard First Aid provides the most comprehensive skill set.
